Mohiniyattom, literally the dance of enchantress is one of the most lyrical of Indian dance traditions and is a solo dance form exclusively performed by women. The music, unlike in other South Indian dance forms, Is in sopana style supported by indigenous rhymes cycles of Kerala. It evolved from the original Indigenous forms, Kerala's rich heritage of classicism Including the ancient techniques of the ritual dances of Kerala such as Mudiyettu, and has all the lasya elements of those styles.
For a variety of Historical reasons the early part of 20th century saw mohiniyattam as its worst phase and the tradition Was almost on the verge of extinction. With the Establishment of Kerala Kalamandalam in the 1930s and Inclusion of mohiniyattom in its curriculum, the Tradition was set on a course of steady revival. In Later years several scholars and performers undertook extensive research and documentation of mohiniyattom And worked towards widening and enriching its Repertoire. Today mohiniyattom has regained all its past glory and has taken its rightful place as a most graceful and beautiful form among the major classical dance traditions of India.
